Google, Facebook, Yahoo and industry and civil rights groups have opposed legislation that would extend the categories of Internet records that the U.S. government can collect without court approval through administrative orders known as National Security Letters.
The companies and groups have pointed out in a letter to senators that the new provisions would expand the types of records, known as Electronic Communication Transactional Records (ECTRs), which the FBI can obtain using the NSLs.
The ECTRs would include a variety of online information, such as IP addresses, routing and transmission information, session data, a person's browsing history, email metadata, location information, and the exact date and time a person signs in or out of a particular online account.

The world has, for the past few years, been awash with unicorn creams. The unicorn, that hallowed status when a startup reaches a billion dollar valuation, would seem to be the ambition of nearly every startup founder.
But the technology industry downturn over the past few months has called the unicorn model into question. All those companies that poured incredible amounts of money into growth at all costs, and purposely ignored revenue and profitability, went out on a serious limb -- and there is going to be some real pain as many of these companies have their valuations trimmed radically.
But all the while that the Ubers, Boxes and SnapChats were raising their monster rounds, other companies were going along a much more cautious route -- raising (comparatively) modest amounts, focusing on revenue acquisition and keeping a close eye on the bottom line.

Attackers are abusing the Windows Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) to re-infect computers with malware after the machines have been already cleaned by antivirus products.
The technique was observed in the wild last month by researchers from SecureWorks while responding to a malware incident for a customer. The antivirus software installed on a compromised computer detected and removed a malware program, but the computer was still showing signs of malicious activity at the network level.
Upon further investigation, the researchers found two rogue jobs registered in BITS, a Windows service that's used by the OS and other apps to download updates or transfer files. The two malicious jobs periodically downloaded and attempted to reinstall the deleted malware.

Verizon Communications will bid about $3 billion for the Internet assets of ailing Yahoo, according to a newspaper report.
The communications company will try to beat other potential bidders such as private-equity firm TPG with a deal that would likely aim to combine Yahoo Web properties, with more than 1 billion users a month, with Verizon''s growing business in online ads, the Wall Street Journal reported late Monday.
The bidding is far from final and Yahoo is expected to hold at least one more cycle of bidding, the Journal J said, quoting people familiar with the matter. But the price offered by Verizon could be an indicator of which way the fight for the acquisition of the Internet company is going.

United Technologies Aerospace Systems expects compound annual revenue growth to average 6 percent over the next five years, and is looking for acquisitions in four key areas, an executive said on Monday. The company is looking for acquisitions in avionics, interiors, structures and hydraulics, UTC Aerospace Systems President Dave Gitlin told a media briefing, noting those are areas where UTC does not yet have a large presence. Any acquisitions likely would boost revenue growth beyond the 6 percent expected from existing operations, he said.

It's bad news for businesses. Hackers have launched large-scale attacks that are capable of bypassing the security protections added by Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), a tool whose goal is to stop software exploits.
Security researchers from FireEye have observed Silverlight and Flash Player exploits designed to evade EMET mitigations such as Data Execution Prevention (DEP), Export Address Table Access Filtering (EAF) and Export Address Table Access Filtering Plus (EAF+). The exploits have been recently added to the Angler exploit kit.
Angler is one of the most widely used attack tools used by cybercriminals to launch Web-based, 'drive-by' download attacks. It is capable of installing malware by exploiting vulnerabilities in users' browsers or browser plug-ins when they visit compromised websites or view maliciously crafted ads.

The June batch of Android security patches addresses nearly two dozen vulnerabilities in system drivers for various hardware components from several chipset makers.
The largest number of critical and high severity flaws were patched in the Qualcomm video driver, sound driver, GPU driver, Wi-Fi driver, and camera driver. Some of these privilege escalation vulnerabilities could allow malicious applications to execute malicious code in the kernel leading to a permanent device compromise.
Similar high-risk flaws were fixed in the Broadcom Wi-Fi driver, NVIDIA camera driver, and MediaTek power management driver. These vulnerabilities can give regular applications access to privileges or system settings that they shouldn't have. In some cases, the flaws allow kernel code execution, but only if the attacker compromises a different service first to communicate with the vulnerable driver.

 If there's one person you'd think would use good security to protect social media accounts, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg would be a good bet. But apparently, nothing is sacred: Zuckerberg's Twitter, Pinterest and possibly Instagram accounts have all been hacked. Zuckerberg's accounts appear to have been compromised sometime on Sunday. In a series of messages posted to Zuck's Twitter and Pinterest accounts, the hacker group OurMine took responsibility, and claimed they were just trying to raise awareness. DON'T MISS: Can you spot how Facebook''s new font is different? Their claim is that Zuckerberg's password -- which was "dadada" -- was exposed by the 2012 LinkedIn password dump . You can check if your LinkedIn password has been exposed with the HaveIBeenPwned tool . Twitter briefly entertained the idea of a merger with Yahoo, and senior Twitter staff met Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer to discuss a possible deal.
The companies met 'several weeks ago,' sources told the New York Post, but Twitter broke off the talks soon after, the newspaper reported Thursday night.
Yahoo put its core Internet business up for sale in December, after giving up hope of finding a tax-efficient way of selling its 15.4 percent stake in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.com.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week granted Google a patent for "Adhesive Vehicle Front End For Mitigation of Secondary Pedestrian Impact." The patent application, filed a year and a half ago, credits Google employees Alex Khaykin and Daniel Lynn Larner as the inventors of the new technology. This latest patent grant is for "a system for protecting a colliding object from a secondary impact."
