A National Guard contingent of 100 military police trained to seek and identify human remains will reinforce coroner-led recovery teams, cadaver dogs and forensic anthropologists already scouring the ghostly landscape, left by a fire that has killed at least 48 people. The grim search is concentrated in the little that is left of Paradise, a Sierra foothills town in Butte County, California, about 175 miles (280 km) north of San Francisco, that was overrun by flames and largely incinerated last Thursday. The killer "Camp Fire," fed by drought-desiccated scrub and fanned by strong winds, has capped a catastrophic California wildfire season that experts largely attribute to prolonged dry spells that are symptomatic of global climate change.

Israel's hawkish defence minister has resigned in protest at Tuesday's ceasefire agreement with Hamas, accusing Benjamin Netanyahu of "surrendering to terror". The resignation of Avigdor Lieberman, one of Mr Netanyahu's coalition partners, rocks the Israeli government and could trigger fresh elections in the Jewish state. Mr Netanyahu looks likely to take over the defence ministry himself, meaning he would simultaneously serve as Israel's prime minister, defence minister, foreign minister and health minister. Mr Lieberman said he was quitting over Israel's decision to accept a ceasefire with Hamas rather than more forcefully confront the Islamist militant group in Gaza. "What happened yesterday - the truce combined with the process with Hamas - is surrendering to terror. It has no other meaning," he said. "What we're doing now as a state is buying short-term quiet, with the price being severe long-term damage to national security." He called for fresh elections "as early as possible". The resignation of Avigdor Lieberman, one of Mr Netanyahu's coalition partners, has rocked the Israeli government and could trigger fresh elections in the Jewish state Credit: REUTERS/Ammar Awad Mr Lieberman is withdrawing his five Yisrael Beiteinu MPs from Mr Netanyahu's coalition, meaning the government now has only 61 seats in the 120 member parliament. US Vice President Mike Pence expressed the Trump administration's strongest condemnation yet of Myanmar's treatment of Rohingya Muslims on Wednesday, telling leader Aung San Suu Kyi that "persecution" by her country's army was "without excuse". Pence also pressed Suu Kyi to pardon two Reuters journalists who were arrested nearly a year ago and sentenced in September to seven years in prison for breaching the Official Secrets Act. "The violence and persecution by military and vigilantes that resulted in driving 700,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh is without excuse," Pence told Suu Kyi in remarks open to the media before they went into private talks on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit in Singapore. "I am anxious to hear the progress that you are making of holding those accountable who are responsible for the violence that displaced so many hundreds of thousands and created such suffering, including the loss of life," he added. Suu Kyi, seated next to Pence, was stony-faced as he spoke Credit: ATHIT PERAWONGMETHA/ REUTERS Leaders of Southeast Asian nations, who will meet Pence on Thursday, are also expected to call for those responsible for atrocities in Rakhine state to be held "fully accountable", according to a statement the Asian countries prepared for a summit, reflecting a stronger line being taken within the group. Even as online platforms tightened rules for political ads, digital spending set new records in the 2018 US midterm elections and appears poised for further growth in 2020. Digital media campaign spending rose 2,400 percent from the 2014 midterms to $1.8 billion, roughly 20 percent of the total $8.9 billion in ad spending, according to preliminary estimates from the research firm Borrell Associates. Online spending, much of it on social networks like Facebook, has been a significant factor in campaigns for a decade, but tighter rules imposed by digital giants in the wake of the 2016 election could have curbed some of that growth.

A judge on Monday denied Florida Republican Senate nominee Rick Scott's request that voting equipment in Broward County be impounded for security when not in use, proposing instead that three armed deputies be assigned to increase security at Broward election headquarters. Take away the concerns of the citizens, take away the concerns of the public that this election process will be protected," said Scott attorney Jason Zimmerman.

The Toronto van attack suspect is a socially awkward student who graduated from college last week, his former classmates say. Alek Minassian, a 25-year-old student, was arrested after 10 people were killed by a van in northern Toronto on Monday evening. He was taken into custody after the rented vehicle ploughed into a crowd, leaving a further 15 people hospitalised. Video footage showed a suspect being handcuffed after a tense stand-off with armed police. Authorities are still attempting to establish a motive for the attack. The Globe and Mail spoke to three of Minassian's former classmates who described him as being socially awkward, believing he may have suffered from a social or mental disability. Mr Bush, 93, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Sunday, a day after a funeral was held for the former president's wife, Barbara Bush, spokesman Jim McGrath said. "President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood," said Mr McGrath. A Democratic group is suing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) over his refusal to call special elections for two seats in the state legislature. In December, two Republican lawmakers ? an assemblyman and a state senator ? resigned to take jobs in the Walker administration. The governor has said he won't call a special election for the vacant seats, leaving them to be filled in the regularly scheduled November election, in order to save the state money. Democrats contend that Walker is delaying the vote in hopes of holding on to two GOP seats after Democrats unexpectedly won a January special election in a Wisconsin district that Donald Trump had carried handily in 2016.

An American tourist has been arrested in Japan after police found the severed head of a woman in a suitcase in his holiday rental flat. Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar, 26, from New York, is currently in custody and being questioned by police following the discovery in Osaka last week. The victim is believed to be a woman, 27, from Sanda in Hyogo prefecture, who was last seen on CCTV cameras alongside Mr Bayraktar, just hours before she went missing on February 16. Security footage reportedly captured the pair meeting at a train station in Osaka around midnight and then entering the apartment building together. The woman had earlier told a friend that she was planning to meet a man she had met via a social networking site, according to local newspapers. Arms, legs, and a torso were also found in a mountainous area nearby Credit: AFP Her relatives raised the alarm with police on February 17 when she failed to return home and her mobile phone stopped working. Mr Bayraktar was captured on security footage entering and leaving the flat several times on February 16 with a suitcase, but there was no further sign of the woman. Six days later, police searched the flat and arrested Mr Bayraktar after receiving a tip that he was confining a woman in the flat before discovering a head in a suitcase. Arms, legs, and a torso were also found in a mountainous area nearby. Mr Bayraktar is thought to have arrived in Japan in January for a sightseeing trip and was booked to stay in the flat for around a week. He has denied t
